God knows us, God is with us
O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit
and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern
my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my
ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O
LORD. You hem me in- behind and before; you have laid your hand
upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me
to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from
your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if
I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the
wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even
there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me
fast. If I say, Surely the darkness will hide me and the light
become night around me, even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to
you. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my
mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully
made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame
was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was
woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my
unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your
thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count
them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake,
I am still
with you.
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious
thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in
the way everlasting.

The greatness of God and the worth of mankind
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have
set your glory above the heavens. From the lips of children and
infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies,
to silence
the foe and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of
your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in
place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son
of man
that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the
heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honour. You made
him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his
feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the
birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
all that swim the paths of
the seas. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the
earth!
Psalm 8
A Psalm of David
God defends us
Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for
help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O LORD,
you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait
in expectation.
But I, by your great mercy, will come into your house; in reverence
will I bow down towards your holy temple. Lead me, O LORD, in your
righteousness because of my enemies- make straight your way before me.
But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may
rejoice in you. For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous; you
surround them with your favour as with a shield.
Psalm 5:1-3.7-8.11-12 - A Psalm of David
Placing all hope in God
My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone
is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I shall never be
shaken.
Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is
my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I shall not be shaken. My
salvation and my honour depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for
God is our refuge. Lowborn men are but a breath, the highborn are but a
lie; if weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only
a breath. Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods;
though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. One thing
God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong,
and that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person
according to what he has done.

A Psalm of David
A desire for God's presence
O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you,
my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no
water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and
your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will
glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name
I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the
richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. On
my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the
night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your
wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth
and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day
long.
